Rebuttal: CDS Irabor Orders Probe As Search For Abducted Officer, Datong Continues

As earlier reported by PurpleWorld that Major Datong was found dead moments after he was abducted at the defence headquarters. Some reports have surfaced indicating that the search for the officer is still on.


In a statement, Director, Defence Information, Major General Benjamin Sawyerr said, “Let me use this opportunity, to reiterate that the NDA authorities, acting on the directive of the Chief of Defence Staff has constituted a board of enquiry to ascertain the remote and immediate cause(s) of the breach of security with a view to sanction any personnel found culpable and also prevent future occurrence.”


Sawyerr added, “Let me also assure that we shall continue to update the general public as events unfold as we are all aware the search and rescue of the abducted officer (Major Christopher Datong) is still on.”

Suspected militia kill 35 behind UniJos


Gunmen suspected to be irate Muslim youths militia have attacked a Christian community behind University of Jos hostel in Jos North Local Government Area, killing more than 35 residents.


The community known as Yelwa Zangam community was said to be invaded by the gunmen at about 9pm Tuesday burning houses with locked up residents who burnt to ashes, an eyewitnesses said.


“The came in their numbers, shooting anyone on sight and burning houses refusing people from the house to escape”, the eyewitnesses told our correspondent.

Major abducted from NDA by Bandits found dead


The military officer Major Christopher Datong abducted yesterday at Nigerian Defence Academy, Afaka in Kaduna has been murdered.

According to reports, his body was found on Tuesday evening, hours after he was captured by bandits. The abductors reportedly demanded N200 million to set him free.

Datong who was from Pankshin in Plateau state, was born 4 January, 1978. One of the photographs circulating in the social media showed the officer with his pregnant wife.

Emerging report has disclosed that personnel monitoring closed-circuit television (CCTV) at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) were asleep when bandits attacked the premises on Tuesday.


It was earlier reported that Nigeria’s foremost military university, the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna was on Tuesday attacked by bandits who killed two officers and abducted four.


According to Vanguard, sources said the bandits sneaked in through a part of the facility that had no fence.
Another source revealed that “it was in the middle of the night, and the personnel that were meant to be monitoring the CCTV had slept off.”


“They could have put everyone on alert, and avert the attack.”
It was learnt that the academy authorities would court martial some soldiers for failing to secure the area.

Police commander, seven others killed in Plateau


Eight persons, including a policeman and a vigilante have been killed in Mangu Local Governement Area of Plateau State.
The policeman, Abdulrahaman Isah, was identified as the Commander, IGP’s Intelligence Response Team based in Mangu while the name of the vigilante was given as Hassan Mohammed.


It was gathered that the victims were killed on Monday evening at Kwoi community of the council area.
The President of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, North East Nigerian Conference, Joshua Mallum, at a press conference in Jos on Tuesday condemned the continued violence in Plateau State.


He said, “A killer is a criminal, hence governement must put all ethnic and religious sentiments aside in dealing with these merchants of death threatening our collective peace and existence in Plateau and Nigeria.”
The spokesman of the State Police Command, Ubah Ogaba, confirmed the Mangu killings in a statement in Jos on Tuesday.


Ogaba said, “On 23/08/2021 at about 1400hrs, the command received credible information about the activity of a notorious syndicate of gunrunners at Kwoi Village, in Mangu LGA of the State. On receipt of the information, the IGP’s Intelligence Response Team (IRT) based in Mangu, Police Operatives attached to Mangu Division, STF and local vigilante were mobilized and swiftly raced to the area.


“On sighting the team, the hoodlums engaged them in a gun duel. But because of the tactical operational capability and superior gunfire of the Operatives, six of the hoodlums were neutralized while others fled with various degrees of bullets wounds.
“Exhibits recovered from them include Three AK 47 Rifles with Breach Nos 868, 106076 and 123487.


“Regrettably, one Insp. Abdulrahaman Isah who is the Commander IGP’s Intelligence Response Team based in Mangu and one Hassan Mohammed a local vigilante gallantly paid the supreme price.”
The police spokesman added that investigation has since commenced.
