NYSC to be Suspended for Two Years

NYSC to be Suspended for Two Years

A report came from the committee chaired by the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.
The Economic Sustainability Committee (ESC) led by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has informed the federal government to consider suspending the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camps for two years.
In the report presented to President Muhammadu Buhari last week and seen by CMM, the committee recommended the consideration of suspension of NYSC camps for 24 months.
“The immediate focus in the Education sector is to address the disruptions caused by the pandemic and ensuing social distancing measures at all levels of education,” the report read.
“Practical steps will be taken to minimise disruption to learning, utilising technology as appropriate. Specifically, virtual learning will be implemented (either online or through broadcast), virtual convocation ceremonies or issuance of certificates (with postponed ceremonies) should be implemented to continue educational progression.”
“In similar context, consideration will be given to suspending the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp Exercises for at least 24 months while allowing deployment to places of primary assignment.
“This will ensure that there is no backlog in the National Service placement pipeline.”
In March, NYSC camps were shut following the outbreak of the novel coronavirus in Nigeria.
A statement released by NYSC at the time said “the corps members shall be posted to commence their primary assignments(PPA) forthwith, while they shall be invited back to the orientation camps when the situation improves”.
Last week, the NYSC scheme submitted a proposal for reopening of its camps nationwide.
It is not yet sure if the federal government will take this portion of the Economic Sustainability Committee’s(ESC) recommendation.
However, PurpleWorld is always good to ground report on every development.

Premier League Resumes Tomorrow

Premier League Resumes Tomorrow

The Premier League returns on Wednesday after 100 days in the deep freeze, with Liverpool on the brink of winning the title in a radically changed football universe.

The English top flight follows Germany’s Bundesliga and La Liga in Spain in rebooting their seasons after the coronavirus lockdown, aiming to cram 92 games into six weeks of breathless action.

Aston Villa kick off against Sheffield United, to be followed later on Wednesday by Manchester City v Arsenal, before a cascade of matches.

Despite vocal complaints from some clubs and stars including Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling, “Project Restart” has largely gone smoothly, with regular testing of players and staff yielding few positives.

But when Villa and Sheffield United kick off, the watching world will be confronted with a jarring spectacle, with an eerie silence in the usually noisy stands.

Piping crowd chants into stadiums, cardboard cut-outs of supporters and live video fan walls will add colour but it will be impossible to mimic the usual vibrant atmosphere.

In total, about 300 people will be allowed in stadiums for each match, with strict health protocols in place.

There will be widespread disinfection of changing facilities, dugouts, matchballs, goalposts, corner flags and substitution boards.

People other than players and coaching staff on team benches must wear face coverings.

The games themselves will look different.

Players have been told to maintain social-distancing during goal celebrations and encouraged not to spit.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta admits players will have to find motivation without the urgency provided by fans.

“The game is different,” he said in his pre-match press conference on Monday.

“The intensity drops a little bit. That urgency from the crowd doesn’t exist any more, how passionate the crowds are in England. We have to adapt.

“We have to experience it. We have to find ways to motivate our players as well in moments.”

But Aston Villa manager Dean Smith said his players were desperate to return, talking about the honour of playing the first game.

“The eyes of the world will be on us and we are looking forward to it,” he said.

“The players have been itching to get back.”

The hectic fixture list, warm summer temperatures and a lack of preparation time could lead to more injuries, so world governing body FIFA has given the green light for five substitutions per match.

The Task Force, which made the decision public after a two-and-a-half-hour meeting presided by its chairman, Governor Seyi Makinde, added that the curfew would now run from 10pm to 4am.
A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Makinde, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, confirmed that other decisions reached include the resumption of classes for Primary Six, JSS3 and SS3 students from Monday, June 29; resumption of work by all category of workers at the state secretariat from June 22; opening up of mosques and churches, which are to operate at 25 per cent capacity; and the decision to limit public gathering to not more than 25 persons.

“Schools are to provide hand wash points with the support of their Parents/

The statement further read: “Mosques and Churches are to reopen and operate at not more than 25 per cent capacity. The situation will be reviewed within the first two weeks. All worshippers are to compulsorily wear face masks.
“Night clubs are to remain shut even though the existing curfew, which used to run from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. is being aligned with that of the Federal Government, which runs from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.
“The Task Force will not mind shutting down everywhere if evidence emerges that the COVID-19 safety protocols are being violated, or should there be an explosion in the number of cases; however, the state government will intensify enlightenment campaigns to ensure the safety of our people.”
The statement also added that the resumption order will not affect the tertiary institutions for now, as the Task Force would review their situation and determine their state of readiness.

North Set For Protest

North Set For Protest

Disturbed by the incessant killings in the North, the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has concluded arrangements to stage a protest on Tuesday.
This was contained in a statement issued to newsmen in Kaduna on Sunday and signed by the spokesman of the group, Abdulazeez Suleiman.
Advancing reasons for the protest, CNG noted that over the last three weeks the escalation of killings and destruction in most of the Northern states had accentuated region-wide tensions.
It observed that the rise in the spate of violence and bloodshed in Katsina, Borno, Taraba, Sokoto, Kaduna, Zamfara and several other northern communities has become a major trying point for everyone – who has remained detached from the reality.
“As a result, at this time of national reckoning, the entire administration seems out of tune with much, if not all, of the rest of the Nigerian population, necessitating a general opinion shift so fast and deeply.
“The consequences of the events of the last few weeks have, therefore, grown politically, economically, and socially too great to be ignored by any genuine northern stakeholders.
“The administration’s various attempts to reassert public confidence with repeated rhetoric of being on top of the situation, seems increasingly discordant as the violent attacks, killings, kidnaps and looting become more regular with calls to protest becoming overwhelmingly loud and widespread.”
The statement noted that it was based on these developments that CNG felt it owed it a duty to bring all stakeholders to stage a protest, adding that the protest will start from Katsina, being the epicentre of killings in the region, on June 16, 2020.
It stated that on June 20, 2020, the protest will be staged simultaneously in all the other states.
The statement called on citizens of a state who feel obliged to voluntarily stick green leaves on their vehicles or places of business in solidarity as they go about their peaceful normal routines.
“Recognised participants shall be required to observe public health instructions by wearing facemasks in addition to a blue cloth wristbands for identification and avoidance of undue infiltration.
“The progress, impact and government response to this first phase shall be monitored and carefully assessed before deciding on the next line of action.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the CNG stresses here that the protests are absolutely meant to the peaceful exercise of citizens’ constitutional rights, to draw the attention of President Buhari and all levels of authority to the plight of people of the North.
“We urge all participants, other sympathisers, to conduct themselves in a peaceful and responsible manner throughout.
“We also urge governments and security outfits to respect the constitutional rights of citizens to express their opinions peacefully.”

Christ Embassy snubs CAN, rejects guidelines for reopening

Christ Embassy snubs CAN, rejects guidelines for reopening

The church described the guidelines as impracticable and unacceptable.

The guidelines were issued by the state government after due consultation with the state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, led by Rev. Dr Nduese Ekwere, as a means of containing the coronavirus pandemic in the state.

However, in a media briefing held at the church headquarters in Uyo, the pastor of the International Worship Centre, Emmanuel Effiong, said CAN’s agreement with the government on the guidelines would not be binding on members of the church.

He stated emphatically that Christ Embassy is not a member of CAN.

He added that the use of face masks throughout the congregational worship as stipulated in the guidelines exposes worshippers to health hazards.

He said the seating arrangement of not more than 200 no matter the size of the church is a clear attempt to gag the church.

Making reference to the Nigerian Constitution to buttress his points, Effiong said the guidelines issued by the state government was against the fundamental right to worship and made it difficult to exercise one’s faith as a Christian.

He said, “Our church is a global ministry and we do not believe or advocate unionism, rather we believe in the unity of faith. Today, we state without equivocation that we are not members of CAN or any other association in the country and as such hold the strong belief that we cannot and should not be bounded by whatever decision the association reaches out with government.

“While we do not question the right of anybody or churches forming association nor are we against CAN or any association setting up guidelines for their members, it is unacceptable to believe that such guidelines will be binding on non-members of their groups.

“The use of face masks for the entire duration of congregational worship is an act, which has been scientifically proven to be hazardous to the health as uninterrupted use of face masks over a long period of time may cause hypoxia- the absence of oxygen to sustain bodily functions.

“Also, we are expected not to sit more than 200 worshippers during each church service, among others. This is a clear attempt to gag the church.”

The Founder of Christ Embassy, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome had earlier lashed out at Church leaders who agreed with the government to shut down churches to halt the spread of Coronavirus.

I couldn’t tell my mum I had COVID-19 – Corps member

I couldn’t tell my mum I had COVID-19 – Corps member

A member of the National Youth Service Corps, Ikeche Emeka , has narrated how he could not tell his mother that he was infected with the coronavirus .
Emeka , whose story was retweeted by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control via its
Twitter handle , shared a story of how a 66-year – old COVID – 19 patient died six hours after admission.
He explained that he contracted the virus while serving in a health facility in Warri, Delta State .
According to him , his mother believes that having COVID – 19 is a death sentence so it was difficult to inform her until he recovered.
He narrated, “ I am a youth corps member serving in a health facility in Warri, Delta State . A house officer and some colleagues were involved in the treatment of a patient who later tested positive for COVID -19. Unfortunately , the patient died . The entire team involved in treating the patient got tested for COVID – 19 and the house officer ’ s result was positive.
“ Before the death of the patient , the House Officer already crossed over to my department ( Obstetrics and Gynaecology) for his next posting . Upon the House Officer’ s test confirmation , my entire department also got tested. The two -day waiting period for the result of the test was filled with tension.

“ The results were out , and I tested positive . The only symptom I had was a mild sore throat.
The night I was evacuated from my apartment to the isolation centres was very dramatic as my gateman kept asking me , as I was entering the ambulance if I had COVID – 19.
“ Many people including my mother thinks it is a death sentence. I knew how my mother and siblings would react to the news , so I told only my father and a few colleagues at work . Eight days after my admission at the centre , I took another test and I was positive . I felt so bad , I didn ’ t eat that day. ”
The corps member described his experience in the isolation centre as frustrating , warning Nigerians to discard the belief that COVID – 19 does not exist .
He said , “ After two negative tests , I finally got discharged. I spent 17 days at the isolation centre . It was quite frustrating as I was used to freedom and suddenly got restricted to a defined space.
“ I remember a 66- year -old COVID -19 patient whose condition was quite bad . He was placed on a ventilator and given oxygen, but these could only do so much . He died barely six hours after admission. Many still don’ t believe coronavirus is real . Some do not believe it kills.
“ Many people infected with the virus may develop mild symptoms or may even be asymptomatic . Some may infect others while they do not even know they have the disease . Unfortunately , the brunt will be borne by the elderly , immunocompromised persons , or persons with underlying ailments. I pray Nigerians to heed to the NCDC guidelines and stay safe especially for the vulnerable ones. ”
