Test Coronavirus Vaccine On Senior Government Officials First, Kenyan Politician Says

Social justice advocate, Martha Wangari Karua, has come out to strongly oppose the testing of the Coronavirus vaccines on Kenyans.

On Saturday, the Kenyan politician, who is a former member of parliament for the Gichugu Constituency and an advocate of the high court of Kenya, said if the Ministry of Health says Kenya was ready for the testing process, then the top government officials should be first in line.

“Now that @MOH_Kenya says Kenya is open to the testing of British vaccines in Kenya, let them be tested on members of the cabinet and their families and thereafter all elected representatives and senior government officials,” read a tweet from the former Minister of Justice who resigned in April 2009.

On Friday, reports emerged that scientists from Oxford University in the UK were planning to test their vaccines in Kenya.

According to a report by the BBC, the scientists are considering trialling the vaccines in Kenya if at all they do not get the expected results in the United Kingdom.

Kenyans have since been questioning the decision to test the vaccines in their country seeing that the COVID-19 cases are still low as compared to other countries.

However, the Ministry of Health refuted claims that they had welcomed the testing on Kenyans, saying they are not aware of any trials.

Speaking during the daily COVID-19 briefing, Health CAS, Rashid Aman, noted that there are ethical procedures that must be followed before approving clinical trials on Kenyans.

I Almost Started Internet Fraud — Zlatan

Omoniyi Temidayo Raphael, known professionally as Zlatan, has revealed that due to frustration and poverty, he almost ventured into internet fraud, otherwise known as “Yahoo Yahoo”.

“I almost carry laptop, Olorun, remain small, I almost carry laptop. I was getting frustrated at some point,” Zlatan Ibile said in an Insta-live interview.

In the interview, Zlatan also explained how girls never wanted anything to do with him when he was in school.

He further thanked God that things are better now.

Internet fraud is rampant in Nigerian and the anti-graft agency, EFCC, are doing their best to see an end to it.

Recall. that Zlatan, Naira Marley and a couple others, were picked up by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, last year, on the suspicion of internet fraud.

The agency later freed Zlatan but detained Naira Marley. They later charged him for identity theft, internet fraud and several others which he pleaded not guilty to.

Naira, since then, has been in and out of court as the case is yet to be dismissed.

Zlatan rose to lime light when he released Zanku, an acronym for Zlatan Abeg No Kill Us, at the tail end of 2018.

The singer went on to deliver several hit songs and has recently become the streets favorite.

COVID-19: We’ll Have More Infections Because Of What Happened Today, NCDC Boss Says After Nigerians Flout Safety Guidelines On First Day After Total Lockdown

Residents in Lagos, Ogun and FCT poured out on Monday, besieging banks, markets and motor parks as government gradually eases the total lockdown it imposed on all three cities earlier.

Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Chikwe Ihekweazu, has said that the country will experience an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases because of the disregard for safety guidelines put in place by citizens.

Residents in Lagos, Ogun and FCT poured out on Monday, besieging banks, markets and motor parks as government gradually eases the total lockdown it imposed on all three cities earlier.

Ihekweazu while speaking at the Presidential Task Force briefing on COVID-19 in Abuja on Monday, said government may be forced to issue another lockdown if cases explode. NCDC Boss Chikwe Ihekweazu

He said, “It is not the guidelines per se, it is the thinking behind it. How do we want to manage the risk of explosion and transmission? Today, we might forgive a little bit because it is the first day.

“We will have infection because of what happened today, no doubt about that. But how can we learn from the mistakes of today into tomorrow, next tomorrow so by Friday hopefully we have normalised some of these things.

“Yes, we knew today would be a problem because for the first time, people were let out of their homes but now they are out and we have seen the sunlight again, the challenge for us as a society is how do we now organise ourselves to mitigate these risks and limit transmission?

“We might have a few extra infection today and tomorrow but what we don’t want is an explosion of new infections.

“If we do have that infection, there will be almost no choice left for the leadership of the country than to ask all of us to go back into our homes.

“So, for the benefit of coming out to reopen parts of the economy, there is a price to pay which is to reorganise ourselves to do this safely.”

Court awards N1m against FG for disrupting #RevolutionNow protest

Court awards N1m against FG for disrupting #RevolutionNow protest

The Federal High Court in Lagos has awarded N1m against the Nigerian Government over the police disruption of the August 5, 2019 #RevolutionNow protest.

The court awarded the N1m in favour of a Lagos-based lawyer, Olukoya Ogungbeje, who said he participated in the protest and was among those tear-gassed by security agents.

The nationwide protest was convened by rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, who was arrested by the Department of State Services on August 3, 2019.

The court, in a judgment by Justice Maureen Onyetenu, declared the disruption of the peaceful protest by the Nigerian Government through the police, as “illegal, oppressive, undemocratic and unconstitutional”.

The judge agreed with the applicant in the suit, Ogungbeje, who sued on behalf of himself and other participants in the protest that the Nigerian Government deprived them of their right to peaceful assembly and association in violation of sections 38, 39 and 40 of the 1999 constitution.

The judge also condemned “the mass arrest, harassment, tear-gassing, and clamping into detention” of the protesters.

Ogungbeje had urged the court to award N500m as general and exemplary damages against the Nigerian Government, DSS and the Attorney-General of the Federation, but the court only awarded N1m.

The judge also upheld the defence of the DSS that it was not involved in the disruption of the protest.

In the affidavit, which he filed in support of the suit, Ogungbeje said when he was co-opted into the #RevolutionNow protest, as a lawyer, he checked the constitution and found that it was lawful.

He however, said on getting to the take-off point of the protest in Lagos, “I met agents and operatives of the respondents who had barricaded the venue of the peaceful protest for good governance in Nigeria.

“I was tear-gassed by agents of the respondents and the peaceful protest was forcefully disrupted by the respondents.

“I have been denied my fundamental constitutional rights of peaceful assembly and association by the respondents without cause.”

Apart from the N1m award, the court also ordered the Nigerian Government to tender a public apology to the applicant in three national daily newspapers.

According to the report, 52.10 per cent of rural dwellers are living in poverty while the poverty rate in urban centres is 18.04 per cent.

The NBS, together with the World Bank used the Nigerian Living Standards Survey to measure poverty and living standards between September of 2018 and October of 2019.
