Support Madagascar On Coronavirus Cure, Nkrumah Institute Tells African Union
A video conference meeting led by Andry Rajoelina, President of Madagascar, has been held among 10 African leaders to discuss the efficacy of the COVID Organics Medicine, which has been developed by Madagascar to treat COVID-19 patients.
“We urge the African Union through its Commission on Continental Free Trade Area to seize the golden opportunity and encourage all African countries to coordinate with the Madagascan Government to assess and order large quantities of the product to treat the disease in their respective countries,” a statement by Dr Benjamin Anyagre, Executive Director of the KNII, said.
Anyagre said such a move was expected to increase Madagascan revenue from exports, improve the research capabilities of the drug company, and enhance the chances of Madagascar becoming a powerhouse of African traditional medicine with products that could rival similar ones elsewhere.
“Most importantly however, this initiative will set the ball rolling on Continental Free Trade, which could see other African products benefiting from it.
“This would improve the lives of Africans and make them understand and believe more deeply in the power of efforts made out of Unity,” the statement added.
It also urged African governments, civil society, companies and capable individuals to join the crusade to make Madagascar the first beneficiary of a potential African economic renaissance.
The institute described the Madagascan innovation as a chance for Africans to show how much they believed in themselves.
“Let us not miss it as a contribution to Agenda 2063. A united Africa is our goal,” the statement added.
BREAKING: Mother, son test positive for COVID-19 in Osun
Osun State Government has announced two new cases of coronavirus in the state, bringing its active cases to 10. The state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Rafiu Isamotu, in a tweet on Sunday said the new cases are wife and son of a previously confirmed coronavirus patient. Isamotu said, “#Covid19Osun Update as at 3rd May, 2020: Two new cases of #COVID-19 infection confirmed today (Sunday), wife and son of a previously confirmed case. Total confirmed cases in Osun now 36; active cases, 10; the number of deaths – 3.” When contacted for further clarification, Isamotu told newsmen that the two new cases were from the samples sent for a test by the state. The state, during the weekend, recorded its third fatality following the death of a patient in her late 60s at its isolation centre in Asubiaro, Osogbo. A statement by Isamotu on Saturday said, “On a sad note, we lost a COVID-19 patient in her late 60s at our isolation centre in Osogbo. We pray God to grant her eternal rest and give her family the fortitude to bear the loss.”

Family of any health worker killed by COVID-19 will get N5m —El-Rufai
The Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir el-Rufai, on Saturday, said the state government had provided N5m in life insurance coverage for each health worker who dies of COVID-19 in the line of duty.
El-Rufai said, “We also insured their (health workers) lives to the tune of N5m.
“Anyone that dies in this process, his family will get N5m; and we have additional disability insurance for those that get sick and cannot walk but are not dead.
“We are also giving a special allowance to all health workers, as well as extraordinary allowances for those on the frontlines.
“This is the broad strategy that we’ve adopted in Kaduna State and we are implementing it with all energy and focus.”
The governor also disclosed that he was the index COVID-19 case who infected four others in the state.
El-Rufai, who was a guest speaker on The Platform, an annual event of the Covenant Christian Centre in Lagos, also noted that the state government took steps to get personal protective equipment for health workers.
The governor said, “Each and every case of COVID-19 we’ve had in the state was imported.
“I was the index case; fortunately, I would say, because it served to scare everyone in the state to come to the reality that COVID-19 is real; it’s not a joke.
“I got it in Abuja and I infected four other people. Happily, all of us are okay now.
“We are all back to our normal lives. We didn’t want to expose any of our frontline workers to any risk, so we have a lot of PPEs for all our health workers.”
Access Bank Shuts Down 346 Branches Nationwide (Full List)
Nigerian financial power house, Access Bank, annunciated the closure of more than 300 of its branches nationwide in a bid cut down running costs as a result of the outbreak of the deadly virus, COVID-19.
This move comes in the wake of a statement made by the group managing director/CEO of Access Bank, Herbert Wigwe who explained the reasons behind a planned mass retrenchment of its workforce, stating that some of its branches will be closed up until December of this year.
Herald NG earlier reported that Wigwe made this disclosure via video conferencing in a town hall meeting with the bank’s staff that later leaked on social media platforms.
Wigwe noted that those to be affected by the mass retrenchment are mostly outsourced staff and workers offering nonessential services. This group makes for about 75% of the Organisation’s staff strength in its branches nationwide.
“We probably don’t need as much security as required; even to the fact that we are not gonna have all our branches open between now and December. We don’t need all the tellers.” Wigwe said in the video.
“The second has to do with our professional cost. Now that is one that is very tricky and it is tricky because I do understand and appreciate that its gonna, you know, bring its own pain to staff.
“We basically have to make the adjustments the same way you sounded when we spoke 10 days ago with respect to basically cutting down cost.
“I will be the first to take the hit and I’m gonna take the largest pay cut, which would be as much as 40 percent. The rest we would have to cascade right through the institution. Everybody may have to make some adjustments of some sort.”
Industry observers have the notion that Wigwe’s retrenchment strategy and closure of its branches affects the most vulnerable of his employees. They also believe the move will be counter-productive for many families; especially the poor if the financial records of the bank truly show it has the capacity to cushion the effect of the pandemic.

Premier League ‘Big Six’ face battle as ‘rebel’ clubs voice concern
Premier League clubs have been told the remaining matches of the 2019-20 season must be played at neutral venues in the latest ‘Project Restart’ meeting.
The clubs were presented with the league’s ‘Project Restart’ plans at a meeting on Friday, and while a statement was issued reconfirming the clubs’ commitment to finishing the season, it is understood there is no possibility that it can now finish on a home-and-away basis for safety reasons.
That has caused an apparent rift between the Big Six and the rest, who ‘have a number of reservations’ about the plans.
The Daily Mail says ‘up to 10 clubs are threatening’ to vote against the season returning in a ballot that requires at least 14 clubs to be in favour of restarting the campaign.
Representatives from Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham ‘warned that voting to curtail the season’ could put 2020/21 in jeopardy too, as they wait for a Covid-19 vaccine could well last for 18 months or longer.
‘The clubs keenest to resume also argued that many of the legitimate health concerns expressed by their rivals, such as the danger of the virus being passed between players and safety concerns about mass crowds gathering outside closed stadiums are still likely to apply later in the year,’ adds Matt Hughes. Well, that’s alright then.
The other ‘rebel’ clubs, ‘who are not all in danger of relegation’, would rather wait for ‘government support to return to training’, while fearing that using neutral venues ‘will damage the integrity of the competition’.
They also doubt whether they can convince all players to return when leagues across Europe are being cancelled due to the ongoing situation.
It is understood the Premier League will look at using between eight and 10 stadiums, with venues likely to be chosen for ease of ensuring social distancing – which would appear to favour more out-of-town sites.
It is also understood the EFL is still intent on playing the remainder of its campaigns behind closed doors at the regular venues, but the governing body is aware current plans may need to change.
Clubs are expected to vote on the key principles of ‘Project Restart’ some time after May 7, when the Government must review the current UK lockdown.
Kano State governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has announced the relaxation of the lockdown order imposed on the state by President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to Ganduje, Mondays and Thursdays would be lockdown-free days from 10am to 4pm.
The governor noted that no markets will be allowed to open unless supermarkets.
He said, the list of the supermarkets would be announced on local radio stations.
Ganduje added that only Yankaba Market where perishable items are sold and Yan Lemo Market would be allowed to operate on Mondays and Thursdays 10am to 4pm.
BREAKING: Osun Records New COVID-19 Death, Discharges Four Patients
The Osun State Government on Saturday announced the death of a Coronavirus patient in the state. This is in addition to four Coronavirus patients undergoing treatment at different isolation centres in the state, who were discharged. The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Rafiu Isamotu, made this known in a statement on Saturday
He said, “Thirty Eight days after he was taken in, the State of Osun today discharged its COVID-19 index case after testing negative twice for the virus.
“Similarly, three health workers in the State who tested positive for Coronavirus have also tested negative for the second time and are now free of the virus.
“On a sad note, we lost a COVID-19 patient in her late 60s at our isolation centre in Osogbo.
“We pray God grant her eternal rest and give her family the fortitude to bear the loss.”
Isamotu urged frontline health workers to always use their Personal Protective Equipment when discharging their duties.
He also reiterated that only accredited isolation and treatment centres in the state are allowed to attend to suspected COVID-19 patients.
COVID-19: WHO To Commence Vaccine Trials In Nigeria | PurpleWorld Headlines
The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that Nigeria has expressed interest to be part of the global solidarity trial of the vaccines being developed to tackle COVID-19 pandemic and efforts are underway to start the process in the country. The Officer in charge, WHO Nigeria and member of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, Dr. Fiona Braka, said this on Friday in Abuja, at the 24th joint national briefing of the committee. She also said that 89 vaccines are being developed globally, including seven in clinical evaluation and several therapeutics in clinical trials to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic. She said, “Nigeria has also expressed interest to be part of this solidarity trial and efforts are underway to start the process in Nigeria too.”
According to her, on the subject of vaccines and clinical trials for Covid-19, research and development is an important aspect of the response and researchers around the world are working hard on accelerating the development of vaccines and therapeutics for Covid-19. She said the WHO has launched various working groups to accelerate various aspects of vaccine development.
“Together with global health actors and partners, over the past week, WHO launched the Access to Covid-19 Tools ACT Accelerator, a global collaboration to accelerate development for equitable access to new Covid-19 diagnostics, therapeutics and vaccines. “We have a total of 89 vaccines that are in development globally, including seven in clinical evaluation and several therapeutics are in clinical trials. WHO is committed to ensuring that as medicines and vaccines are developed, they are shared equitably with all countries and people.
“We do have the solidarity trial which is an international clinical trial to help find an effective treatment for Covid-19, launched by the WHO and partners. More than 100 countries have joined the solidarity trial and to date, over 1,200 patients have been randomized from the first five countries to evaluate the safety and efficacy full drug and drug combinations,” Braka said.
An UAE research institute has developed a breakthrough treatment for COVID-19 which could be a game-changer in the global fight against the virus, according to Hend Al Otaiba, Director of strategic communications at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation.
The Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center (ADSCC) has developed an innovative method which involves extracting stem cells from a patient’s blood and reintroducing them into the lungs via inhalation of a mist, regenerating lung cells and preventing the immune system from overreacting, Hend Al Otaiba tweeted this morning.
“The treatment has already successfully undergone an initial phase of clinical trials – with 73 patients making full recoveries without any adverse side effects. The recipients were moderately or severely ill before treatment, with many intubated in an ICU ” she added.
More trials are being conducted and we should have a clearer understanding of the treatment’s potential in the coming weeks, but it could have a significant impact on our ability to live with the virus until a vaccine is available. The ADSCC effort is one of around 60 significant studies in the UAE aiming to produce COVID-19 treatments and improve testing, in line with the UAE Government’s determination to mobilize the country’s resources towards overcoming the virus, she concluded in series of 5 tweets.
